Sugar may be sweet, but the effects it has on the skin and body are anything but. What really happens to the skin when you eat sweets filled with sugar?

The collagen breaks down, which makes you look older

Did you know that the collagen in the skin is affected by what we put into our bodies? After you reach around 35 years of age, the skin becomes more fragile, and is thus affected by our everyday diet to an even greater extent. Sugar causes the collagen in the skin to break down and increases the risk of sun damage and other external stressors.

Carbohydrates and glucose are also types of sugars

It is quite easy to forget how much sugar our food actually contains. Many of us try to avoid sweets, cake and other pastries on weekdays, and often have a false sense that we are doing enough. However, we should keep in mind that carbohydrates also contain a large amount of sugar that contributes to the deterioration of the skin. However depressing it may sound, for optimal skin health, it’s best to avoid pasta, white bread and rice. Instead, replace these white carbs with a salad - it will not only benefit your skin, but also your overall health!

Sugar increases inflammation

Sugar causes inflammation in the body and also within our skin cells. This means that pre-existing skin problems that are caused by inflammation, such as rosacea and acne, can be exacerbated by the intake of sugar.

There are types of sugars that are safe for treating yourself!

Believe it or not, there are actually sugars that are good for our skin. These include fructose and lactose that you can find in foods such as fruit, dark breads and dairy products. These contain fibers that are good for the skin, as well as vitamins and antioxidants that are important nutrients for the body in general.
